Coding a trading bot - which broker to use?

Hi everyone,
New to the community here.
I am looking to code a trading bot to trade stocks.
I'm very new to algorithmic trading, I have some coding experience from highschool and university (excel VBA) and I want to start trading as a way to grow my money. I also enjoy programming and my neighbor claims he makes good money trading forex using an algorithm, so I thought if he could do it, so can I.
I want to use interactive brokers because of their low commissions and python because of it's wide application (in other things), however I've read getting interactive broker to work with python is difficult. What are some of the other brokers that are comparable/better than IBKR for algotrading?
Is trying to use python the wrong approach or should I just be open to using other languages?
I want to trade stocks because of all the instruments out there, I know the most about stocks. I'll be coming back to this forum so I appreciate any and all help I can get!

Saxo vs SCB

Hello I'm 21 going in army soon and plan to invest 500 every month into SWRD(90%) + EIMI(10%) which broker should I use?
The fees
SCB - (10 dollar min commission fee or 0.2%, 0.2% trading fee, and a 0.43% forex spread)
Saxo - (10 dollar min commission fee or 0.06%, 0.08% trading fee, custody fee of 0.12% and a forex spread of 0.75%)
Also what do you guys think of investing in IT etfs like QQQ or healthcare etfs with low expense ratio.
Do let me know if I'm missing out something or there's a better way of investing like investing every 2 months instead or robos.
Thank you for reading.
Edit - Thanks all for the feedback I really appreciate it. I have decided on Interactive brokers. I forgot to mention that after 2 years of NS I will be in uni for another 4 years and I probably won't be investing during this time. Assuming I liquidate my investment at 27 from SCB and transfer to IB, I calculated that I'm at a gain of 60 sgd by not going with IB which is really nothing and it seems kind of troublesome to do that so I'll just stick with IB. Thanks all

Beating the UK brokerage via true arbitrage - £8k -> £98k ($128k) since 21st April

Beating the UK brokerage via true arbitrage - £8k -> £98k ($128k) since 21st April
Alright you American autists, here's a gains post from the UK across the pond - listen up because it's pretty incredible, managed to screw over our broker to turn ~£8k into £98k / $128k USD by reading the small print, true u/fuzzyblankeet style.

https://preview.redd.it/9mlup18v0q951.png?width=343&format=png&auto=webp&s=aea1393d304d16063d62d54d30cc5be9b23d937a
Unfortunately, we don't have options trading, commission free robinhood which crashes, or any other US based degeneracy, but instead we British chaps can trade "CFDs" ie. 'contracts-for-difference', which are essentially naked long / short positions with a 10-20% margin (5-10x leveraged), a 'holding cost' and you could theoretically lose more than your initial margin - sounds like true wallstreetbets autism, right? Well grab a lite beer (or whatever you lite alcoholic chaps drink over there) and strap in for this stuff:
So, CMC Markets, a UK based CFD brokerage, wanted to create a West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil 'Spot' product, despite WTI contracts trading in specific monthly expirations which can thus have severe contango effects (as all of you $USO call holders who got screwed know) - this was just a product called "Crude Oil West Texas - Cash", and was pegged to the nearest front-month, but had no expiry date, only a specific holding cost -> already a degenerate idea from their part.
So in early April, just before when the WTI May-20 expiry contract 'rolled' at **negative** $-37, the "WTI Cash" was trading at $15 at the time, but the *next* month June-20 expiry was still $30+ we (I am co-running an account with an ex-Goldman colleague of mine) simultaneously entered into a long position on the "WTI - Cash" product, and went short on the "WTI Jun-20 expiry", a pure convergence play. Sure enough, the June-20 tanked the following week, and we made over £35k, realised profits. But meanwhile the May-20 also tanked, and we were down £28k. But rather than realise this loss, we figured we could just hold it until Oil prices recover, and profit on both legs of the trade.
However, CMC Markets suddenly realised they are going to lose a lot of money with negative oil prices (Interactive Brokers lost $104m, also retards), so they screwed everyone holding the "WTI - Cash" product trading at $8 at the time, and pegged it to the December 2020 expiry trading at $30, with a 'discount factor' to catch up between the two.
https://preview.redd.it/zjjzyahx0q951.png?width=517&format=png&auto=webp&s=9523bab878f06702133631f12c1109081f299f65
Now fellow autists, read the above email and try to figure out what the pure arbitrage is. CMC markets will charge us a 0.61% **per day** holding cost (calculated as the 10x levered value of whatever original margin you put up, so in our case £8k*10x=£80k*0.61% = £500 per day, £1.5k on weekends for extra fun) on our open positions, but also "increase" the position value by 0.61% per day vs. the **previous day's** WTI - Cash value. Got it yet? No? Still retarded? Here's where maths really helps you make tendies:-> If your 'cost' is fixed at 0.61% of your original levered position, but your 'gains' are 0.61% of the previous day's position, then your gains will be ever increasing, whereas your costs are fixed.
So we added some extra £££ (as much as we could justifiably put into a degenerate 10x levered CFD account) and tried to see if it works. Long story short, it does. At this point in July we were making **over £1k per day on a £8k initial position*\* regardless where the WTI Dec-20 fwd moved.
Unfortunately, eventually CMC markets realised what utter retards they were, and closed down the arbitrage loophole, applying the holding costs to the previous day's value. But not before we turned £8k into £98k, less holding costs.
https://preview.redd.it/uh0f8knz0q951.png?width=553&format=png&auto=webp&s=c7e629f72de5aeb4e837ccef44ecae708f058bee
Long story short, puts on $CMCX they're total retards, and given what a startup robinhood / other brokerages are, never assume that only they are the ones taking your tendies away, sometimes you can turn the tables on them!

IB for Vietnamese citizen in Vietnam.

Can a Vietnamese citizen open IB broker account in Vietnam? We have a very large community of American CFDs and Forex traders. Most them have account with TRADEZERO, which is quite expensive in fees and commission compare Interactive Brokers. Thanks.

I need Help with IB!

So people im kinda stuck now in here with Interactive Brokers and i don't know what to do. I have IBKR Pro acc and i can't switch to Lite it doesn't let me, i have 250 USD on my acc thats all i have i thought its going to be enough to make like 1-2-3 dollars of trades and my problem isn't losing on trades its that firstly i cannot trade Stocks because it doesn't allow me to subscribe to a Market data because of my account balance its too small so i thought i could trade Forex because its Market Data is free (as much as i saw) but then the biggest problem its the commission to make one trade is 5 dollars and basically even if i put my whole balance 250 USD on One trade i price should make at least 3% move in my favour to make 2.5 dollars and people who trade know that 3% its no Joke for One day trade(plus using my whole acc) im myb thinking of Swing trading or holding for even like month on something like MSFT etc doesn't matter but do you guys have some advice for me what to do im really lost now by not knowing what to do.

Picking an online broker for investing for a non-US Non-EU investor

I live in Turkey and picked up an interest in investing to be able to feel financially safe and hopefully free in the future, two years ago.
I picked a couple of divident paying stocks and bought small amounts. I also picked a couple of funds and invested even smaller amounts to see how they perform.
One thing I noticed is that, the market is not likely to beat the inflation (if it can, it will be barely - and statistics are not very reliable at the moment), and nobody in the country remembers a period where USD lost power to Turkish lira in a persistent way, but we are seeing the reverse right now. This is so obvious and certain for most of our people that just buying USD alone is an investment form which will not fail you.
Obviously unless I happened to pick up the stocks that will constantly outperform the whole market, it's unlikely that I gain a financial freedom in this way. And I can't do day trading or short term investment because I can't sit in front of a screen and monitor the market. Also, dividends are not reliable as a company might decide to skip a year or stop paying it altogether. And the divident performance of the whole market is around 1%.
So, I don't feel like this environment is the right one for long term investment. That's why I am planning to invest in the US and maybe the UK stock markets.
There are a couple of banks that let me invest in those markets, but their commission rates are insane. The minimum they will get for one transaction is $25. I was planning to start with something like $250-300 and if I invest with them, there goes one-tenth of my money. However, transferring money to a foreign account costs 40-50 Turkish liras, which roughly translates to $7-8. Considering that I'm planning to put small amount of money and buy stocks with it, transferring money to a broker makes sense.
However this arises safety issues as I'm going to invest with an American or British broker. Moreover it will have to be an online broker because others don't accept foreigner investors. Risk increases.
While I was doing research, I learnt that Saxobank, Tradestation Global and Interactive Brokers accept Turkish citizens. I can't pick Saxobank as they have a minimum of $10,000 which I won't have for a while.
I checked them out to see if they are safe, but apart from obvious advertisement websites, it is very confusing.
For instance, https://www.forexpeacearmy.com/forex-reviews/165/tradestation-stock-broker and https://www.forexpeacearmy.com/forex-reviews/165/tradestation-stock-broker They both are slammed here. But check this out: https://www.tradingview.com/brokeTradeStation/reviews/
Here, where the company can answer, there is a different story: https://www.trustpilot.com/review/interactivebrokers.com This one is another: https://www.trustpilot.com/review/tradestation.com?languages=en
So, what are your thoughts about these two brokers? Are there any alternatives I am missing? Or should I just not invest in these markets?
EDIT: I'm also worried about inactivity fees as I plan to buy and forget whether stocks or funds.

Personal Experience: Change brokerage from RBC&TD to interactive broker

I just want to share my personal experience change brokerage from RBC&TD to interactive broker since late 2019. I found interactive broker much better than TD/RBC for my US equity investment. I invest predominantly in US stocks, including Canadian companies dual listed in NYSE/NASDAQ.
Some of the big Pros:
  1. Very low commission compared to RBC/TD. 1USD for fixed pricing, 0.35 for tired pricing.
  2. Participation in pre-market and after-market. This help me to fill my aggressive limit order.
  3. USD/CAD forex is 2USD, even cheaper than Nombert Gambit.
  4. Fractional shares allow me to invest in Google/Amazon/Tesla in a more reasonable pace.(buy 500 dollars for four times vs buy 2000 at one time)
Some Cons:
  1. They have several platforms which is very confusing. TWS is most powerful but look ugly on Mac. Client portal is nice looking but function-lacking. I actually found IBKR IOS to be powerful but also nice looking, so end up mostly use IBKR IOS.
  2. Be careful using EFT deposit. There is a 60 business day holding period if withdrawal to a different bank.
  3. One might need to spend some time research on their fee structure, deposit/withdrawal procedure.
I have ignored IB for years due to it being an American brokerage and do not have physical locations. Finally tried it and now think it is the best for US equity investment in Canada. Hopefully if we move more investment to online brokerage such as Questrade/IB/Wealthsimple, eventually will shake the big 5 and force them to lower their ridiculous commission.(It is still nice to have one of the big 5 for some portfolio.)

Malaysia To Impose Restrictions On Cash Transactions The Malaysian government plans to impose restrictions on cash transactions reports local media platform The Star. According to the publication, the move is part of efforts to combat money laundering in the country. Commenting on the plan, Datuk Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour, the deputy governor of Malaysia’s Central Bank Negara (BNM), remarked: “This is to address the abuse of physical cash used for illicit activities.” Malaysian economist, Barjoyai Bardai believes the proposed cash transaction limit in the country could boost digital currency adoption.

At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading down nearly 5% at its current price of $8,850, which marks a notable drop from its 24-hour highs of $9,300.
Prior to today’s drop, Bitcoin has been caught in a relatively tight trading range between $9,000 and $9,500 for a couple of weeks, and neither bulls nor bears had been able to incur enough strength to push the crypto out of this trading range until early this morning when bears forced it below its lower range boundary at $9,000.
In the time since its drop, BTC has shown no sign of slowing its decent, as it continued to slowly grind lower as the morning dragged on.

[Request] I was looking for some insight on low spread brokers in the US.

Hey everyone.
I’ve been trading crypto for a while and have been out of the forex game for a bit and was hoping to get back into it since the crypto market has been flat for so long but I ran into some trouble when trying to find a new broker. The 2016 ruling on eligible participants put my previous broker out of business and made it impossible for me to trade with certain brokers such as Interactive Brokers.
I was looking for a new broker that has low spreads which seem to have all but died in the US. I’m okay with commissions but the spreads at Oanda, forex.com, TD, and Ally are all way too high for my blood; especially for my bread and butter pair GBP/USD. ATC brokers actually seems like a pretty good brokerage for my needs but after some research I found troubling news with their bankruptcy and I don’t quite understand how an introducer brokerage works. (maybe the answer lies with ATC and you guys can take my mind off the drawbacks.)
I have a pretty decent strategy that after back testing with commissions and spreads equal to ATC’s under sub-par* conditions has max 30% drawdown, avg 15-20% profit per month, and 1.23 sharpe over 10 years. The downside of this is that with my strategy I have a very tight stop, 6-12 pips most of the time. The larger the spread the worse off I am. A 10$ per lot commission is nothing compared to an additional pip of spread in my case.
Can anyone suggest a US brokerage that suits my needs other than ATC or do I have to take the risk on them not going bankrupt again?
*Sub-par trading conditions include 3x the avg spread taken into account as slippage, including Friday as a trading day even though the strategy doesn’t work near the weekend, and optimized for a different timeframe and currency pair.
TL;DR - Is ATC Brokerage the only low spread broker for the US and are they trustworthy?

A few months ago I came across a way to hold crypto in my RRSP/TFSA and have been answering questions about how to do that in comments, DM's, and Skype consults. I figured it would be helpful to put together one big comprehensive FAQ. Cryptocurrency is treated as a commodity by the CRA and you must pay capital gains taxes on any profits if held outside a TFSA. If bitcoin goes to $1m as some are predicting, the Canadian government is going to be taxing a huge windfall in capital gains taxes.
BACKGROUND
Bitcoin & other crypto cannot be held directly in a RRSP/TFSA, and there are no eligible ETF's in North America yet. However, the ETN COINXBT which trades on the Stockholm Stock Exchange in Sweden (Nasdaq Stockholm) is eligible.
ABOUT COINXBT
COINXBT holds bitcoin directly and its price per share is based on a 0.005 multiple of the current bitcoin price.
For example, if the current price of bitcoin is $10000USD, a share of COINXBT will be worth $50USD (ie: $493 Swedish Kroner)
Company's website and full prospectus at: https://xbtprovider.com/
Price quote / chart: https://www.bloomberg.com/quote/COINXBT:SS
HOW-TO TRADE
Only some Canadian brokerages allow you to trade on eligible international exchanges in your TFSA. Some do not.
Typically placing trades on international exchanges online is not an option and must be made over the phone broker-assisted at a much higher cost than typical North American securities.
CANADIAN BROKERS
I've called pretty much every brokerage to inquire if international securities can be held in a TFSA and what the fee is to transact. You may want to call yourself to see if policies have changed, but here's a summary:
Not available, or not available in RRSP/TFSA:
FAQ's
Are you sure it's legal? I'm quite sure it's illegal.
Who is your broker? CAD account?
How do I make a trade once I'm ready?
How do I calculate the number of shares to trade to max out my TFSA?
Market or Limit order?
When can I trade? Is it only possible to make the trade while the Swedish market is open and the TSX are open at the same time? Or can you place the order at any time of day?
Which number did you use to contact the brokerages?
What happens when there is a fork?
What about other cryptocurrencies?
How is the price of COINXBT determined?
Why not just buy GBTC?
Why can't I place a trade online myself?
Feedback
If you've managed to get crypto into your RRSP/TFSA in any other ways than listed above please do leave a comment and I'll update the post. Thanks!

Any brokers other than IB offer the interbank rate (i.e. close to vig-free) CAD / USD swapping?

I swap cash between CAD and USD fairly often so have used Interactive Brokers because they offer the interbank rate (or something very close to it)...having to pay 1-2% vig on every swap would be a non-starter for my strategy.
Anyone know another brokerage that offers the same or something close to it? (I know about Norbert's Gambit, but want to do these swaps more or less instantaneously, which IB allows)
Edit: I should also have included that it would be OK for me if a brokerage simply waived (or reimbursed) any Forex fee/spread if account commissions exceeded a monthly threshold or something, since I usually generate modest monthly fees

"Norbert's Gambit" and banker abuse

I see a lot of posts here with people suggesting "Norbert's Gambit". And on the face of it, it seems like a good idea.
But how many people have tried calling up their banker and asking for a more reasonable forex fee structure that doesn't require such quackery?
Does anyone get the feeling that the banks are conspiring across the industry to keep foreign exchange fees artificially high?
Mutual funds require disclosure of MERs, including new requirements for statements. Brokerage accounts require that if the bank itself is the counterparty in a transaction, that such be disclosed. But forex seems like the last big way in which Canadian bank/brokers abuse their customers.
Why don't customers, faced with paying 2% on a transaction that costs the banks almost nothing if performed electronically, rebel against their banks?
Anyone ever written their politician over the outrageous and obvious conspiracy between the big-5 major bank/brokers to keep foreign exchange within brokerage accounts very opaque pricing-wise, and unduly high? The competition bureau has cracked down, at least partially, on VISA credit card fees, but nothing on forex.
What about Interactive Brokers? They don't charge spreads and just charge a small commission on forex transactions. That's what I use, but certainly those who, by choice, or by force (as the government doesn't let you hold a TFSA/RRSP personally -- it must be trusteed with a major broker), have to use big bank/broker forex are being robbed blind.

Introduction to investing as a U.S. citizen residing in Japan

[meta: I ask for help in making sure this information is accurate and correct. Please contribute as you see fit!]
WARNING!! I am not a lawyer, accountant, or broker, nor do I have any experience or training in any of those fields. ALWAYS confirm with a professional before taking any advice you read on the internet.
Foreward
If you're old enough to pay taxes, you should start investing. The earlier, the better.
Here’s another example to illustrate the enormous benefit of getting an early start. At age 25, Eric Early invests $4,000 per year in a Roth IRA for 10 years and stops investing. His total investment is $40,000. Larry Lately makes yearly deposits of $4,000 in his Roth IRA starting at age 35 for 30 years. His total investment is $120,000. Assuming both portfolios earn an 8 percent average annual return, at age 65, Eric’s IRA will be worth $629,741, but Larry’s IRA will be worth only $489,383. By starting 10 years earlier and making one third of the investment, Eric ends up with 29 percent more.
- quote from "The Boglehead's Guide to Investing"
Target audience
This is an introduction for U.S. citizens with residency in Japan who want to do long-term investing in U.S. equity (stocks, bonds, etc.).
Disclaimer
This advice may not be accurate for citizens of countries other than the U.S. or for those U.S. citizens living in Japan who work for the military or are only temporarily living and working in Japan as affiliated with a U.S. company. This is also not advice for ForEx or day traders looking to make money. Nor is it advice for what to invest in. This is also not advice for investing in the Japanese stock market.
This is just one way to invest in U.S. equity from Japan. There are other ways.
Assumptions
  • You're a U.S. citizen
  • Your income is in JPY
  • You want to invest in U.S. equity (stock market, bond market, etc)
  • You have basic knowledge about taxes and tax-related terms
  • You have at least $10,000 USD to invest (or $3,000 USD if age 25 or younger)
Background
I am an ordinary guy living in Japan. I have disposable income and, rather than pour all of it into my local izakaya and Philipino hookers (who hang out in front of Mister Donut at night and ask if I "want the massage?" (just kidding, really!)), I wanted to invest in my future by saving for retirement. I'm an early 30's-year-old guy and spent about a month reading up on investing and then set off trying to invest as a resident of Japan.
My Story
I moved to Japan 3 years ago after working in the U.S. I have an IRA leftover from my time in the U.S., but never contributed to it since moving to Japan (thankfully - find out why in a bit). I recently saw a post from /personalfinance (seriously, go read information in that sub if you want to have more money upon retirement or just get out of debt!) and decided to read the book "The Boglehead's Guide to Investing" based on recommendations there. After that, I started looking into my options for investing from Japan.
Before I left the U.S. for Japan, I rolled over my 401k into an IRA using Vanguard (arguably the best broker available for U.S. citizens). Since moving to Japan, I had not contributed anything to my IRA. So, the first thing I wanted to do was start contributing to my IRA again, and use any remainder to invest in U.S. equity. Turns out this is not as easy as it sounds.
I found out that in order to legally contribute to my IRA, I had to pay U.S. taxes on my income used to contribute to it. Well, if you're like me and don't make an awful lot of money, you're probably filing with Foreign Tax Credit/IRS Foreign Earned Income Exclusion. This stuff basically let's you deduct all your taxes in Japan, as it on Japanese income and you already paid glorious Nippon taxes on that income. For me, this basically meant that I owed the IRS absolutely nothing every year. Great! Right? Buuuuut since I didn't pay any U.S. tax on my income, I cannot use it to contribute to my IRA! Dammit! (But actually a blessing in disguise because if I had been contributing to my IRA, I would have been breaking U.S. tax law because I didn't pay taxes on it.)
So, I started looking into other ways to invest: the U.S. stock market, bonds, etc. After reading The Boglehead's Guide, I knew I wanted to invest in Vanguard's mutual index funds. My first instinct was to open a brokerage account (which is different from your IRA account) with Vanguard. I started filling out the online form, but ran into issues. You have to specify a U.S. address. Also, you have to specify your U.S. employer. I had neither of these, so I called Vanguard (from Japan at a ridiculous call charge) and spoke with someone about doing this. They gave me the OK but said I'd have to submit a paper form through snail mail, and sent me a PDF to fill out and mail in. I mailed it (from Japan using EMS which was like $20..), and got a call about a week later. Surprise! Because I'm not working in Japan temporarily for a U.S. company or living on a U.S. military base (considered U.S. soil, I assume?), I actually can't open a brokerage account with them. Dammit again! What a waste of money calling them and mailing the form overseas.
So, I started looking into other options. I read about a few other brokers and most people agreed that I should either use Fidelity or Interactive Brokers. I had never heard of Interactive Brokers and honestly they seemed scary at first, so I decided to go with Fidelity, who I had actually heard of and is a U.S. based firm. I created an account with Fidelity, but once again ran into roadblocks when trying to open a stock trading account. I didn't have a U.S. address or employer, and actually wasn't able to link my U.S. bank account with them either (for reasons unknown). Dammit once again!
So, I started reading more about Interactive Brokers. Okay, it's still a little scary, but there are positive reports about using them online. I signed up for an account with minimal hassle, linked up my bank account, was able to transfer money over to them, and then successfully bought U.S. shares! Sweet success! Finally!

How to Invest

Part I: Contributing to your IRA
If you do not have an IRA, you probably should, as they are your basic investment option and tax-friendly to boot. However, good luck setting one up as a resident in Japan! Vanguard will happily babysit an IRA you opened prior to leaving the U.S., but they will not let you open a new one with a foreign address. I don't know about other brokers such as Fidelity or Schwabb, but it's probably the same story there.
If you are like me and happen to have an IRA leftover in the U.S., you CAN contribute to it, but in order to do so you must not deduct your Japanese tax on your IRS 1040 or file Form 1116, "Foreign Tax Credit". In other words, you must pay U.S. taxes on any income used to contribute to the IRA.
Refer to your broker for how to actually get the money to them from Japan.
Part II: Investing in U.S. Equity from Japan
Using Interactive Brokers
First, let me tell you a little bit about Interactive Brokers (IB). They are a service mostly used by regulaprofessional traders. The fees are very low and reasonable. However, they have a service charge of $10/month if your commission is equal to or less than $10 USD in that month. This is probably not a problem for people over 25 years old investing with $10,000+ USD, but for people 25 and under with an initial investment of $3000, it's possible you might not make the minimum commission per month. Beware of this fee.
IB lets you fund the account from many different currencies, regardless of what market you are buying (this needs confirmation, but seems to be accurate). So, whether you have a U.S. bank account or a Japanese bank account, you can fund the IB account. You can even fund from both.
IB does not let you invest in U.S. mutual funds. This sounds like a deal-breaker, but it's actually not. You can still invest in U.S. ETFs. This includes Vanguard's total stock market index ETF, total bond market index ETF, etc.
IB has an iPhone app that is pretty good and probably an Android app too. Although, as someone doing long-term investing for retirement, you probably don't need this and don't want to be checking your account too much (refer to /personalfinance as to why).
IB has multiple account types. You will probably see IBLLC and IBSJ. The differences are two-fold: First: an IBSJ is only used to trade Japan domestic equity. You don't want this because you want to trade U.S. equity. Instead, IBLLC is used to trade overseas (U.S. equity). Second: as of 2016, IBJS requires your My Number information, but IBLLC does not. Again, you don't want IBJS, so don't worry about the My Number information.
Open a "Japan Resident Individual Account for IBLLC" account online. This is a lengthy process. Make sure you have the required information.
  • You will need to send info about your current address in Japan, your 在留カード (zairyuu/"gaijin" card), job information, bank account information, and so on. I got confused and sent my My Number card information as well, but this only caused a hiccup in their process and I was told to remove it. Don't submit your My Number information.
  • You need to choose your base currency. Your base currency determines what currency you trade in and receive dividends/money from selling in. I think you need to specify USD here, but not sure. I chose USD because U.S. stocks are in USD and I used my U.S. bank account to intially fund my account. It may not matter, but this needs confirmation.
  • You need to specify that you have trading experience. I forget the actual numbers you need to put into the form, but make sure you put enough experience that allows you to trade ETFs overseas. You can fiddle with the numbers right there in the form, and options open up as you change the numbers. Play with it until it's just right. This part is hazy, and just seems to be some safeguards for IB so that new investors can't sue/blame IB for their own trading stupidity when they lose all their money. If you really don't have any experience trading, IB offers virtual "fake" accounts you can use to play around with trading. I suggest you try it.
After about a week you should have your new account. The next step is funding it, or you may have selected to fund it up front when you created the account so it may already be done. Anyway, the easiest way is to have IB request the wire transfer from your bank. I did this. It was really annoying, but it took about another week or so to go through. Beware that you probably can't start buying right away and need to wait for the transfer to clear.
Congratulations! You're ready to start buying now. Refer to /personalfinance in what to invest in. Remember that you are limited to buying ETFs and a few other things, and not mutual funds (but you can get their ETF equivalents).
Using
TBD... (anyone want to fill this out?)
Part III: Taxes
You need to declare and pay taxes on your dividends and any capital gains you make. Beware.
TBD... (this is arguably the most important part, but I just don't have time to go into it now. Someone feel free to help!)
TL;DR: Open an account with Interactive Brokers online and buy ETFs.

[Serious] I'm done with RH tendies boys, I'm ready to upgrade to a real broker...buuuut...

...which one?
Now, I've been shopping around a little bit, and understand enough of the markets to have narrowed down my picks to USAA, IB, and Optionhouse, but I'm looking to see if anyone has some experience with the advantages and disadvantages of the platforms, and what I should be considering before I take the plunge off the peir.
1) USAA. Commission is pretty gnarley, but through family assistance, I will be trading at the reduced commission rate of ~$6 pretty consistantly. Gives advance currency exchanges for trading foreign companies, and seems to have a competent, if not exactly sleek UI. Can't figure out how to access options on it though. I'm told they have very good fulfillment and instantanious placement times for orders, but I'm not sure how relevant that is.
2) Interactive Brokers: Lowest comissions of the 3, until I start playing with bigboys numbers, and won't need y'alls advisories, so don't worry about that. From what I can see, they're inconveniant as fuck, but you get what you don't pay for. I am <25, so I only need 3k to open an account with them, and that's not a problem. They don't do forex/futures (don't remember which), but that's fine cause I'm not interested in those yet.
3) Optionshouse: Somewhere between the previous two. Reasonable commission rates, very competative options trading rates, but not much said about them in the fors-or-againsts. Going into this one mostly blind.
Can anyone add any significant DDs on these brokers that I should be considering, or even feilding some of their own? I'm done with Robinhood and it's buggy piece of fuckery that not even an autistic faggot like me can abide.
(Don't worry about shitflinging, ima take everything in here with a mountain of salt. I just wanna hear peoples experiences/gripes about them)

How to avoid Questrades hidden forex fees.

So I just found out recently that when I purchased US stocks with CAD on Questrade. They hid the forex fee through the conversion rate. This whole time when I was reviewing my trades I thought the exchange between CAD / USD was pretty much on par since it mentioned $0.00 commission. So after buying about $17k of stocks, it seems that I lost about $450 USD from conversion :( which is a lot for a 22 year old student who doesn't earn much.
Is there a way I can avoid the extra conversion costs? I don't have a US chequing account so could I bring USD to a bank and then send the money to questrade with US cash that I exchanged somewhere else at a lower cost.
Another option is swap my portfolio to Interactive Broker now that my portfolio is >$10k? But I'd need to wire the money over to then.

Norbert's Gambit vs forex account?

Hi, I must be missing something important here, please enlighten me!
I read about Norbert's Gambit as a way to get closer to spot exchange rate instead of what banks offer. But isn't opening a forex account achieve the same goal with much less hassle? Is there some additional cost or problem preventing people from opening a forex account and only pay something like 0.00002 in commission on top of spot price?
Edit: after some more searching and experiments, I think Forex is the way to go, it's slightly trickier as most have various form of limitations, like higher withdraw fee, or monthly maintenance fee, etc.
I currently use Interactive Broker for exchanging USD/CAD at spot rate. Their cost is around $10 per month, plus a very tiny commission. This is not practical if you are only exchanging a small amount for one time. But if you already use them for stock trading, or doing a large enough exchange, it is a much better deal than bank rates.

[26/M] Receiving a windfall and looking for a bit of a clean slate

I'm 26 currently making around $30k a year doing freelance work after transitioning into a new industry. I live at home and my previous work experience allowed me to pay off any debt I had. I'm at a point now where I would like to make some of my investments a little bit safer but also have an account to play around with a bit.
First of all, I have been maxing out my Roth IRA at vanguard for a few years now and will continue to do so; no 401k in my line of work unfortunately. I do not foresee myself moving out any time soon and if I did it would most likely be only for a few years with roommates before I end up inheriting a small house.
Currently my main savings is $12k sitting in a High Yield Investor Checking account with Charles Schwab. This is a .1% APY checking account with a brokerage account attached. There are no fees for this account.
The more complicated part of my situation is this. I have an Interactive Brokers account that I opened up when I was 24 with about $5k. I was pretty dumb with this money and invested in a small number of individual stocks. I haven't sold any of my original investments and I'm up a couple grand right now but would like to get this money into something a little less risky. Since I am now over 25 Interactive Brokers is also charging $10 a month unless I can cover that in commission which lately I haven't been doing. I will also be receiving a $30k inheritance soon.
What I think I want to do is sell off most of what I have in my Interactive Brokers account right now and set up a lazy portfolio with either Schwab or Vanguard with the inheritance and a chunk of what I take out of IB. Any preference for the two?
My main question then is where to go with the money I would like to play around with? I am not looking to ever get in to options, futures, forex, etc and will mainly just be gambling/speculating with some excess income. Commission fees are great with the IB account but there may be some spans of time where I just want to relax and the idea of paying $10 bucks a month for something I wouldn't be utilizing anywhere near its full potential isn't that appealing to me. Then again, for the periods where I do want to be active, the much higher commission costs at other brokerages will be bothersome. Is Robinhood possibly a good route for me to take? I also wouldn't mind something with a much simpler interface as sometimes IB's TWS makes my head start to spin.
Part of me also thinks going with Schwab for everything might not be such a bad idea. Any thoughts?
Anyway, I appreciate the help and hopefully my plans don't seem extremely dumb.
